Evaluation of antibiotic use patterns among farmers and antibiogram from livestock wastes and fish pond effluents in selected animal farms in Cross River State, Nigeria

The extensive and misuse of antibiotics in animal production has become a public health threat. evaluation antibiotic use pattern among farmers antibiogram from livestock wastes effluent farms was conducted Cross River State. A descriptive cross-sectional study undertaken with 379 multi-stage sampling technique employed the selection respondents. Bacteriological analysis samples susceptibility testing also conducted. Results revealed that 66.8% had good knowledge on its resistance. Majority (91.0%) used their for purposes growth promotion, treatment disease prevention. Tetracycline, ampicillin, streptomycin, cotrimoxazole, gentamycin vancomycin were most frequently groups antibiotics. total 240 bacteria isolated percentage occurrence bacterial isolates were: Pseudomonas aeruginosa (14.2%), Escherichia coli (12.5%), Staphylococus aureus (10.8%), while Staphylococcus hominis (2.1%) least prevalence occurrence. All showed multi-drugs resistance, highest resistance to several commonly by (80.8% chloramphenicol, 80.8% 73.1% tetracycline). Statistical sociodemographic variables farmers’ respondents’ level education, years farming experience, farm type, statistically significant (p<0.05). There is need improve possible consequences inappropriate farms.
